British Cemetery
Monuments
By the eighteenth century, the British colony in Porto proceeded to burials in the bank of the river Douro, during the low tide. After many negotiations, in 1788, the consul John Whitehead managed to acquire land for the construction of a decent cemetery, with the condition of having a fence with high walls. However, only in the 1820’s the cemetery received its first monuments.
With a romantic environment the cemetery has among its occupants many from the very well-known foreign families connected to the Porto wine trade. Highlights go to the mausoleums of Eduardo Moser, the Consulate John Whitehead, Feuherheard, Kebe, Jebb and Brindle and to the little steles of the Baron of Forrester and of the family Ktazenstein.
As it is closed to the public it is necessary to ring the bell, preferably between 09:00 and 16:00.
