Ponte das Barcas

Ponte das Barcas

Bridges
Project by Carlos Amarante, ordered by the General Company for the Agriculture of the Upper Douro Vineyards in 1806.
Laid on 20 pontoons, and despite its fragility, it was an indicator of progress for the region allowing rapid communication between the two riverbanks and facilitated the trade of goods and people. It had the peculiarity of being able to be dismantled and its 20 pontoons being moored to the riverside when the level of the river suddenly rose. After the destruction of the bridge by Napoleon's troops in 1809, during the French Invasions, it was rebuilt, in a productive time, but with 33 pontoons.
Part of the Urban Wine Route.
