Gardens and Parks
The Villar d’Allen estate is a unique and authentic heritage site representing the golden age of urban and cultural development experienced by Porto in the mid-19th century, following the Liberal Wars. Created by João Allen—a renowned art collector and founder of Porto’s first museum—the estate features the home of his dreams, built at the height of the Romantic era; it has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 2010.

The estate reflects João Allen’s passion for collecting, boasting a collection of over 140 different camellia cultivars. The gardens were later expanded by his son, Alfredo—a man who played a pivotal role in creating Porto’s most beautiful 19th-century gardens, such as the Crystal Palace, Cordoaria Garden, Carregal Garden, and Passeio Alegre Garden.

Villar d’Allen is a perfectly cohesive example of a luxurious, delicately decorated Romantic-era residence, paired with what was the first English-style garden created in Portugal—a style now known as the "Romantic garden." It is of special interest as a legacy that is still cared for and presented to visitors by the family that created it. The gardens surrounding the house resemble an informal botanical garden, bringing together centuries-old trees from every continent. Stepping into the house is like stepping back in time, wandering through rooms filled with memories of the six generations that have lived there and succeeded in preserving this heritage to the present day. It is truly a unique case.

The family maintains its own Port wine label, and guided tours (always led by family members) can conclude in a relaxed atmosphere, chatting casually while savoring a magnificent Tawny Port and enjoying homemade sweets. Programs:
1. Garden Experience – A tour of the gardens, highlighting their landscape significance – €12/person. Duration: ~1.5 hours.
