Statues, Sculptures & Fountains
Created by Diogo de Macedo in 1930, the statue represents Afonso de Albuquerque with a daring look, holding a ship on his hands, symbolizing his fleet leadership.
Afonso de Albuquerque was born around 1462 and he was educated in the royal residence of D. Afonso V. In 1503 he was chosen to lead a trip to India, which took place only with D. Manuel II, by whom he was designated Viceroy of India. He conquered Ormus, Goa and Malacca and became known for his strong policy of land defense. He died in 1515, while returning from Goa to Portugal.
