This building by the architect José Manuel Soares, is located in the gardens of the Palácio de Cristal and is part of the National Public Reading Network. It is spread over 2 floors, occupys an area of 3500 m2 and is divided into three sections: Children and Youth, General Reading and Multimedia. It contains 90,000 monographs, 10,000 multimedia documents and 140 periodical publication series. Available services include home loans, catalogue search, watching films, listening to music, consultating paper documents and non-book material, copying documents, access for visually impaired readers, scanning documents and computer and Internet access. There are also decentralized services to the community, through the Mobile Library (the Librarycar) and SABE - the Support Service for School Libraries. In 2010 it was integrated into the Network of Associated Libraries of UNESCO.
