Ourigo Beach
Beaches
The Ourigo beach has been awarded a Blue Flag and a Golden Beach award. In the 16th century it was customary for the Romans to flock to Praia do Ourigo to the holy bath that served to keep away fears and cure ailments such as stammers, gout or epilepsy. In celebration of St. Bartholomew, adults and children would dive into the sea three times. On the last Sunday in August they continue today to hold the procession of St. Bartholomew during which figures dressed in colourful paper costumes parade through the streets. The procession finishes at this beach with the participants uniting with the people to bathe together in the sea.
