Monument to the Portuguese Colonising Effort

Monument to the Portuguese Colonising Effort

Statues, Sculptures & Fountains
It was designed and created by Sousa Caldas and Alferes Alberto Ponce de Castro in 1934.
It was purposely erected to appear at the Colonial Exhibition, inaugurated in June 1934, at Palácio de Cristal. It comprises an obelisk topped by the Portuguese coat of arms. At the base, six adorned sculptures are symbolic of the figures that strove to establish the colonies: the woman, the soldier, the missionary, the trader, the farmer, and the doctor.
