Founded in 1884, with the name Goelas de Pau, and the objective of isolating and treating cholera patients. In 1914 it became the Joaquim Urbano Hospital in honour of the great figure of Portuguese medicine in the field of Public Health.
For over 100 years it was only used for the study and treatment of Infectious and Contagious diseases. In 1985, it received the first patient infected with HIV, the infection responsible, since then, for most of the clinical activity developed.
