The Bouça Apartment Block, in the centre of Porto, by Rua da Boavista, was completed nearly thirty years after the construction of its first phase.
The project was commissioned by the Fundo Fomento da Habitação (Housing Development Fund) in 1973. After the Revolution of April 25, 1974, the people organized themselves into neighbourhood committees, framed by the state program – SAAL, Serviço de Apoio Ambulatório Local (Local Support Service). The second phase of the work was only resumed in the early years of 21st Century.
In the Bouça project, architect Siza Vieira kept the original design by recovering materials and covers from the two existing blocks. The missing trims and borders were then built as well as the coffee shop, the cooperative headquarters, the leisure studio and adding an underground car park.
