In 1728, D.João V created, by Royal Decree, The Department of Fire and Explosives. In 1832 it was appointed as a military force by the Fire Department. In 1853 the city council introduced the emergency call system called “Stroke boxes” In 1946 it got its current designation – Batalhão de Sapadores Bombeiros. In 1959 its effective Headquarters were inaugurated and then in 1987 its first station (Sé) in the Historical centre of Porto.
The mission of Porto´s Firemen’s Workers Battalion is to guarantee the safety of the people, property and of environment, principally in the Municipality of Porto. They aim to prevent situations which present danger or at least limit their effects, minimizing harm to people involved, in accordance with their predetermined high levels of quality and professionalism in a way which honours both preventative and help services in Portugal.
