Church de São José das Taipas

Religious temples
The Church, designed in a Neoclassical style by Carlos Cruz Amarante, was built between 1795 and 1878. The chapel is from 1666, as well as the objects inside. The church exhibits a painting describing the Ponte das Barcas disaster, dating from 1845, and the city’s most ancient crib, from the 18th century, from the school of Machado de Castro. It also exhibits a painting from the German school, representing Nossa Senhora da Providência. The Brotherhood was asked to pray for the souls of those perished in the disaster of Ponte das Barcas, in March 1809, having some of the bodies been buried there. It possesses as well a Museum and the catacombs, which occupy the entire space of the presbytery.

Nowadays the Church welcomes/houses:
- the Ukrainian Orthodox community, which celebrates Holy Mass, usually on a fortnightly basis, on Sundays, at 10:30 am;
- the Taizé Prayer at the diocesan level, which takes place on the third Wednesday of the month at 9:30 pm;
- the relics in veneration: of the Little Shepherds of Fátima (the Saints Francisco Marto and Jacinta Marto); S. João Paulo II; S. João XXIII; Blessed Maria Clara;
- Portuguese and / or foreign-speaking pilgrims who, with the help of a priest, want to celebrate the Eucharist;
- Holds funeral rites, weddings; Baptisms; and celebrations of jubilees of marriage.
