Carmina Burana, Orff
Event
Carmina Burana is undoubtedly the most famous work by the German composer Carl Orff, and is inspired by a collection of around 300 chants written by vagrant students and clerics of the 12th and 13th centuries, who led a life outside the rules. Thus, in 1937 he composed a scenic cantata that bears the same name as the literary original and whose best-known fragment is "O Fortuna".
The poems, written mostly in Latin, include love songs, tavern songs, satires, student songs… but they all constitute a chant of love and carnal pleasures, a position that clashes directly with the conception traditionally attributed to the medieval period.
Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 is the best-known hymn to the human brotherhood, and is often heard at official events such as the German Reunification or the Olympic Games. Its premiere, at the Imperial Court Theatre in Venice in 1824, was received with great expectations: no one wanted to miss the performance of the long-awaited symphony, which was expected to be the last public performance of the German genius, as it turned out to be, for in the three following years and until his death, Beethoven remained at home suffering from various illnesses. The recital fully met all expectations.
