Classe do Jaime
Event
Distrust in political life, distance from the sensitive and the bodies, the increased power of technology, climate emergency, social disorientation and emptying of public space dispute the everyday life of cities. In its sixth edition, MEXE - International Art and Community Meeting focuses on the theme “The risk”, accepting it as part of life, embracing it as essential to artistic creation.
The performance “Classe do Jaime” fulfils this desire to take risks at the intersection of worlds that often seem distanced.
In the region of Santarém — the starting point of this creation —, in Minde's typical language, there is no word for “dance”, but there are two for “ball”: “O-do-Barreiro” and “Classe do Jaime”. This is a work done by two, based on the traditional dances from “Serra De Aire” and “Serra dos Candeeiros”. A female dancer and a musician meet with various groups, for a continued practice of this type of repertoire. Under the surface of the work, questions were asked that call for topics such as gender, eroticism and weight to be composed. What does traditional dance ask contemporary dance?
