Sabine Lancelin is one of the most experienced European Director of Photography, having taken that role on many of Manoel de Oliveira's latest films – namely, Je Rentre à la Maison (2001), The Fifth Empire (2005), Belle Toujours (2007), Christopher Columbus: The Enigma (2008), Singularities of a Blonde Girl (2009) and The Strange Case of Angelica (2011) – and has collaborated with outstanding contemporary filmmakers like Chantal Akerman, Alain Guiraudie, Philippe Grandrieux , Raoul Ruiz, Michel Piccoli, among others. In this talk-conference conducted by António Preto, director of Casa do Cinema, Sabine Lancelin will talk about the challenges a director of photography in cinema faces today, starting from her experience with some of the directors she worked with and, in particular, from her collaborations with Manoel de Oliveira.
At the end, Je Rentre à la Maison (I’m going home, 2001), Oliveira's first movie with the collaboration of Sabine Lancelin, will be screened. This film was directly inspired by an incident that occurred during the shooting of the previous film, Word and Utopia (2000), in which Manoel de Oliveira invited actor Renato De Carmine to, in a last-minute emergency, replace Michel Piccoli in the role of Father Jeronimo Cattaeno. The dialogue was extensive, time to memorize it was scarce and Oliveira intended to film it in one shot. Despite being an experienced actor, De Carmine was repeatedly getting his lines wrong and, frustrated, left the set saying: "Ritorno a casa". Shocked with the old actor’s behaviour, Oliveira immediately had the idea of making a film from there. Piccoli, who involuntarily was the cause of this situation, would play the role of that same renowned actor who, at the end of his life, is forced to leave the scene in “I’m going home”.
