Like in the previous year, the 2021 Blue Flag programme granted the city's four bathing areas: Foz, Gondarém, Homem do Leme and Castelo do Queijo. The first three areas have been granted this status for the 14th consecutive year.
This status is granted by Associação Bandeira Azul da Europa (ABAE) proving the quality of the bathing waters and beaches, as well as the support services and facilities. The beaches of Luz, Ingleses, Ourigo, Carneiro and Pastoras; Gondarém and Molhe; Homem do Leme and Castelo do Queijo were again awarded the Blue Flag, shows that all the required requirements have been met.
In order to get a “Praia com Qualidade de Ouro” (Beach with Gold Quality) status, a bathing area must have “excellent” bathing water quality for the last four bathing seasons and all analysis of the last year must pass the strictest criteria of the European Bathing Water Directive. In Porto, this year the Golden flag can be seen flying in Gondarém and Homem do Leme.
In 2020, Porto received the status, for the fourth time, “Município Mais Azul” (the Bluest Municipality) by Associação Bandeira Azul da Europa (ABAE) and by Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente (APA).
