Porto was designated the "Most Blue Municipality" in 2020 by Associação Bandeira Azul da Europa (ABAE) and by the Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente (APA). This is the fourth time in the last five years.
The city of Porto was the only one awarded among the 13 municipalities that have 78 blue flag beaches of the Northern Region, which shows the recognition of both entities, the award promoters, with the commitment and performance of the Municipality, via Águas do Porto, to maintain the quality of the nine beaches that cover the coastline with an excellent level.
The honour, which focuses on Environmental Education activities carried out within the scope of the Blue Flag Programme, also recognised the adaptation efforts carried out this bathing season, since this year, due to the rules of social distancing imposed by the pandemic, the activities usually carried out in beaches and at Water Pavilion in person, were transposed to a digital format and posted on Pavilhão da Água’s Facebook.
The message of environmental awareness, safety, participation and the multiplier effect achieved, the number of activities and partners involved, as well as the explicit concern for the senior population and people with disabilities, were some of the criteria that contributed to the award "Most Blue Municipality".
The initiatives, developed from an inclusive perspective, included translation into Portuguese sign language, in all activities presented in video format. In addition, the activities, organised by the Environmental Education Unit of the municipal company Águas do Porto, was the result of a joint action with several partner entities, from the outset Porto City Hall, but also CIIMAR - Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research, the ColorADD project, LIPOR, Ordem dos Biólogos, Agência de Energia do Porto, SEA LIFE Porto, Associação de Surdos do Porto and Centro de Dança do Porto.
The Municipality of Porto had already obtained the designation of “Most Blue Municipality” in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and, this year, it re-validated the award.
For the first time this year, the city now has all its beaches with blue flags, by winning its last blue flag at Castelo do Queijo Beach.
