Between 18 and 20 September, Praia Internacional do Porto hosts the Renault Porto Pro for the second decisive phase of Liga Meo Surf, the competition that qualifies the national champions.
It is already this weekend that the beaches of Porto and Matosinhos will receive the best national surfers, in what is the 15th consecutive edition of the northern stage, one of the most historic in the Liga Meo Surf calendar.
Scheduled for the next few days, 18, 19 and 20 September, Renault Porto Pro is the fourth and antepenultimate stage of this year's main surfing competition in Portugal, will decide the titles of national champions in the sport.
As this is an exceptional year, marked by unprecedented conditions, Liga Meo Surf remains the only official competition in the world to award a surfing title.
The resumption also took place during the month of June, under a strict contingency plan, fitted to the current reality of the League, which was monitored by specialists in public health and validated by Instituto Português do Desporto e Juventude.
"Surfing has been an example in the way it has readjusted itself to this new reality. The fact that it was the first surf league in the world to be able to kick-off after the lockdown, proves not only its organisational capacity, but also conveys an important sign of hope to all athletes and sports agents. In this context, we can only hope that this next stage in Porto will be a success and that everyone can enjoy excellent waves, safely", said Catarina Araújo, Councillor for Youth and Sports at Porto City Hall.
The first three stages of the competition took place, respectively, in Figueira da Foz, Ericeira and Sintra, and Porto is now responsible to kick-off this second and decisive phase of the sports season, which will conclude in Cascais, from 15 to 17 October.
Afonso Antunes, on the men’s side, and Teresa Bonvalot, on the women’s side, lead the respective rankings at the Porto stage is usually a critical one, since the winner of Renault Porto Pro always ends up being a national champion.
As usual in recent years, Praia Internacional do Porto will be the main stage of the competition, this year without an audience, with the beach in Leça da Palmeira as an alternative stage.
