Municipal Plant Nursery grows more than 600,000 plants per year. In the largest green factory managed by a municipality and supplying the entire Metropolitan Area, there is an "admirable new world" that covers over seven hectares, in Areias (Campanhã). The population can also use it, requesting freely native trees and shrubs to plant in their garden.

As for camellias, there are about 300 different varieties at the Viveiro Municipal. This is just a small sample of the immense production capacity of this Porto City Hall’s facility, instrumental in the environmental strategy outlined.

Since 2014, the space has invested in the production of native plants, largely due to the project that, since that same year, brought together the Municipality of Porto, Área Metropolitana do Porto-AMP (Porto Metropolitan Area) and Universidade Católica do Porto. We are speaking about FUTURO, a project that set a goal to plant 100,000 trees by 2021 in the AMP, essentially to reforest burnt areas.

The objective was ambitious, but thanks to the boost that the Viveiro Municipal gave in this sense, together with the efforts of hundreds of volunteers, it was possible to reach that round number in November 2018, three years before the deadline. In order to have an accurate notion of the impact of this infrastructure, set up at Quinta de Furamontes (acquired by Porto City Hall in 1937), from 2014 to 2019 about 75,000 trees were grown there, within the scope of the FUTURO project. Although the time period is not exactly the same, the calculation that the city of Porto contributed about 75% to the objective of planting 100,000 trees in the project will not be far off.

Out of curiosity, it was Arouca, the southernmost municipality in the Porto Metropolitan Area, the largest recipient of the trees grown at the Viveiro Municipal, about 7,000 specimens only between 2016 and 2019. During the same period, 6,000 trees from the Viveiro Municipal were "exported" outside of the AMP.

The Viveiro Municipal do Porto is located at Rua de Areias, in the eastern part of the city. It has about 6,500 m2 of greenhouses, grows about 10,000 perennial plants per year and, during the São João Festival, about 6,500 manjericos (basil) leave the nursery to embellish the city.

Soon, the brand-new Centro de Recolha de Animais (Animal Collection Centre) will be its neighbour.
