The programme of Teatro Nacional São João (TNSJ) kicked off this year with "Odisseia Nacional" by Teatro Nacional D. Maria II, also marking the return to Porto of Artistas Unidos, with "Vida de Artistas", Jorge Silva Melo’s last production, and the showcase of international shows, Finisterra.

All these shows are part of São João National Theatre's programme for the six-monthly period, which by the way is quite full. Thus, until February 25th, TNSJ and Carlos Alberto Theatre - TECA will host "Decalogue of Anxiety" by Margarita Mladenova and Ivan Dobchev, an homage to Samuel Beckett, "Prometheus '22" by Gábor Tompa, who returns to Porto, "Focs/Vatre" by Carme Portaceli, and "Iokasté" by Lukáš Brutovský.

In March (from 7th to 11th), Teatro Carlos Alberto will host the premiere of "Uma Ideia de Justiça" [An Idea of Justice] by Isabel Minhós Martins, directed by Joana Providência. From March 16th to April 2nd, the present artistic director of TNSJ, Nuno Cardoso, will premiere Arthur Miller's "As Bruxas de Salém". Interestingly, the former artistic director, Nuno Carinhas, will return to the Carlos Alberto’s stage, from April 13th to 23rd, with "A Última Gravação de Krapp" [Krapp’s Last Tape] by Samuel Beckett.

Another former artistic director of TNSJ located in Porto, Ricardo Pais, makes a new return to the stage with "Long Jornada para a Noite [Long day’s Journey into Night] by Eugene O'Neill, translated by Luísa Costa Gomes, from April 20th to May 7th.

Another edition of the Festival Internacional de Teatro de Expressão Ibérica (FITEI) is planned for May, followed in June "Vânia" by Luís Mestre, "Uma Outra Bela Adormecida" by Beatriz Brás, and "José, O Pai" by Elmano Sancho, as well as "Teoria das Três Idades" by Sara Barros Leitão, in the 70th anniversary of Teatro Experimental do Porto. Also that month, "São João" will host "Suécia", Pedro Mexia’s debut as a playwright, directed by Nuno Cardoso. The play will be on stage from June 8th to 25th.
