It is not yet in 2021 that the biggest São Silvestre race in the country is back on the road. In a decision taken jointly by Runporto, Porto City Hall and the main sponsor of the event, the race did not take place, as planned, last Sunday due to the current pandemic context. The race will thus be postponed to 13 March 2022.

The pandemic situation and the new containment measures announced last Wednesday, December 22nd, by the Government, such as the mandatory testing of all participants in sporting events, led the organiser to assume that the conditions for holding the 27th edition of São Silvestre were not met.

For the general director of Runporto, this was a sad and difficult decision, because it was taken so few days before the race and when they had everything absolutely prepared to carry it out”.

However, says Jorge Teixeira, "we cannot ignore the pandemic progress in recent days", a reality that adds to the "fact that the race was scheduled for the day immediately after Christmas, which would not help in this planning either", particularly in the mandatory presentation of a negative test to covid-19, when initially only the digital certificate was required.

The five thousand entries – a reduction compared to pre-pandemic years – had already been sold out for several days and some participant kits had already been delivered. Entries that have already been made remain valid for the new date and new dates will be announced for those who have not yet picked up their race number.

Last year, São Silvestre did not go to the streets in the city, having been run the 10 kilometres (or done the 5 kilometres walks) virtually.
