The Festa do Cinema Francês [French Film Festival] is back for its 23rd edition. The event takes place in Porto from 7 to 20 November and its vast programming includes national previews, new films, specialised programmes and even a section dedicated to gastronomy.

Since 2000, the Festa do Cinema Francês has been an important showcase dedicated to the dissemination of French-speaking cinema. The 23rd edition is held this year and is one of the highlights of the Portugal-France 2022 Season – a programme that bridges the gap between the two countries through shared cultural programming.

The event wants to take to the venues of the city of Porto “a wide range of emotions and themes for reflection. Comedies, dramas, thrillers, romantic or even films particularly aimed at younger audiences, in a total of 21 films divided into three different venues.”

The festival kicks off in the city on November 7th, at Rivoli . Municipal Theatre, with “Simone, le voyage du siècle” (2022), by French director Olivier Dahan. The film chronicles the intense life of Simone Veil, Holocaust survivor, a feminist activist known for fighting for the legalisation of abortion in France and for becoming the first woman elected president of the European Parliament.

The opening of the festival, at Rivoli, will be followed by twenty other films at Cinema Trindade and Cinema NOS Alameda. The Festival has, once again, a section dedicated to families with fiction and animation films so that the little ones can also enjoy and discover the seventh art.

There are movies to cater to all tastes! At the Festa do Cinema Francês, it will be possible to explore sections of specialised programming such as Cinema à Mesa – a tribute to gastronomy, where “cuisine meets cinema through four tasty comedies”; the Segunda Chance section, which includes films already screened in Portugal in the last two years, which deserve to be watched again; and a programme in partnership with ACID - Association for the Distribution of Independent Cinema - which during the Cannes festival gives visibility to directors with little distribution.

This is the time to immerse yourself in French film culture. The festival will be held at Rivoli from 7 to 20 November, at Cinema Trindade from 10 to 15 November and will have screenings at Cinema NOS Alameda from 17 to 20 November. Ticket prices vary between 3€ and 7€ and can be purchased at the respective cinemas.
