The Escadas do Monte dos Judeus are nominated for the Prémio Forma 2022, a national architecture award that honours the best new construction works made in Portugal.

The project is nominated in the C4 category of Public Space and competes with the “Percurso Acessível à Basílica da Estrela”, the “Passagem Pedonal”, the “Auditório CCB” and the “Requalificação Espaços Exteriores – Alameda do Beato”. The winner will be announced at the end of this month.

The Forma Awards aim to encourage and promote architects and quality in architecture through innovation in construction and landscape enhancement and to reward new construction works carried out throughout the Portuguese territory that stand out for their quality and uniqueness.

It should be recalled that the escalators in the Miragaia area have been in full operation since June 2020 and are intended to mitigate the journey made on foot between the higher level and lower level of the city. The work consisted of the introduction of escalators, new access ramps and repairing pre-existing pavement and structures.

As part of a general strategy for the development of an interconnected network of pedestrian paths assisted by mechanical means in one of the areas with a steep hill in the centre of Porto, the work aims to resolve the lack of connection between Miragaia and Cordoaria, facilitating the access for the population living in this area to the Santo António's General Hospital and to other existing buildings in the higher level.
