The Municipality of Porto has created a new service, Explore Porto, which challenges both citizens and visitors to explore the city in a different way, as, for the first time, real-time information about transport and points of interest is available on a unique platform.

This service was created to provide useful and reliable information on mobility and points of interest in the city of Porto, thus ensuring the shift of a planned and static information system to one based on real-time information.

Explore Porto is a web-based app, available at explore.porto.pt, which uses around 1,000 signalling devices scattered throughout the city – blue beacons – to convey information about the site where the beacon is located, whether this information is about mobility or tourism. Thus, any resident or visitor who has a smartphone can instantly access more details about that site, thus being able to explore the surroundings, as well as plan the best way to get around and visit other sites in the city.

Explore Porto is developed by Porto Digital, in partnership with the city of Helsinki. The project was also co-financed by Turismo de Portugal and supported by STCP, Metro do Porto and Associação de Turismo do Porto.

Explore Porto features:

  • Itinerary suggestions: to plan a route, to get real-time information on public transport;
  • Exploring points of interest in the city: with access to the description, history, address and opening times and relevant updated information;
  • Identification of points of interest near the current location;
  • Alerts on temporary changes to the normal running of public transport routes;
  • Selecting favourites: save routes or points of interest that we want to have available;

In the short term, it is planned to strengthen the interconnection of Explore Porto with the different modes of transport in the city for an increasingly active promotion of mobility. Users will be able to access more information, with better quality and detail, on the availability of soft modes of transport (shared bicycles and scooters), train and metro timetables, among others.

The Explore Porto platform was made available during the lockdown period, having registered since then more than 16 thousand users, a number that has grown exponentially as movement restrictions are lifted.
