Do not miss the Special Session: Matías Piñeiro, at the Serralves Museum’s Auditorium.
Organised in partnership with the Escola das Artes (School of Arts) from Universidade Católica do Porto, as part of an artistic residency of filmmaker Matías Piñeiro, the session consists of two inaugural works from the filmography of the young Argentine filmmaker: Una Mujer Silenciosa (developed as the final year project at the Universidad del Cine) and his first feature film, El hombre robado.
Piñeiro's oeuvre is rich in humorous undertones, aware to everyday gestures and to conversations with friends, creating seductive mirror games between fiction and documentary, between true and false, extending characters and situations from one film to the next. Highbrow and eclectic, the director's films are filled with literary references, developed through artistic mediums (museums and theatres) and are connected with the Nouvelle Vague cinema, reinventing it in the present by using the anachronistic format of 16mm film.
In El hombre robado we included a guided tour of the Buenos Aires Museum of History, while we get involved in a scheme of forged art to the rhythm of “Facundo”, the masterpiece by writer and reformer Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. The film marks the beginning of a collaboration with actresses Julia Martínez Rubio, María Villar and Romina Paula, who will star again in his subsequent films and who have, however, become the faces of the new generation of Argentine cinema.
