KastroKriola

Event
In KastroKriola, Cape Verdean playwright Caplan Neves recreates António Ferreira's Castro, bringing us a scenic creolisation that tries to find out how this Portuguese classic symbolically resound in today's Cape Verde. This tragedy of royal conflict is now seen from the perspective of the internal intrigues of the political parties of our time. If, in Ferreira's play, the risk of foreign occupation and the tarnishing of “a spotless gold” are the driving forces behind the penalisation of the love between Pedro and Inês, in KastroKriola it is the scandal of the homoaffective relationship of Petra – a woman with a promising future in the upper reaches of power – and Kastro who comes to “set this party and country ablaze”. Both also face persecution of their peers for “reasons of state” and use the same weapons in the face of ignorance and tyranny. It is said of Petra: "She obeys a greater order: her heart." KastroKriola marks the culmination of a residency of Cape Verdean artists at TNSJ, under the direction of Nuno Cardoso and working closely with our teams, made possible by the cooperation agreement signed in September 2019 by the Cape Verden Ministry of Culture and Creative Industries, the Portuguese Ministry of Culture and Teatro Nacional São João.
