Cavalleria Rusticana
Event
80 years are history, mission, tradition, and responsibility. 2021 marks the return of projects that are part of the genesis of Coliseu, and one of the main focus is opera. The first production is “Cavalleria Rusticana” by Pietro Mascagni, scheduled to premiere on June 9th.
Considered the first verismo Italian opera, a movement that introduced greater realism in the narrative, as opposed to romanticism, “Cavalleria Rusticana” is an opera in one act where love, betrayal and revenge are the main ingredients.
The action takes place on Easter morning, in a Sicilian village, and tells the story of Turiddu and Santuzza. Returning home from military service, Turiddu discovers that his fiancée, Lola, has married Alfio, a wealthy peasant. Hoping to make her jealous, Turiddu seduces Santuzza. Lola ends up getting involved with Turiddu, and Santuzza, heartbroken, reveals to Alfio the infidelity between the two lovers. Challenged by Alfio to a duel, Turiddu says goodbye to his mother and leaves for his deadly duel.
Premiered in Rome in 1890, Pietro Mascagni's masterpiece will be presented at Coliseu Porto Ageas with talented Portuguese artistic groups and soloists, to be announced soon, in a production that marks the great return of opera to this theatre.
