As sete últimas palavras de cristo
Event
In 1786, Haydn received a special commission from Cádiz, Spain: instrumental music for the Three Hours ceremony, evocative of the Passion of Christ. The ceremony lasted between midday and three in the afternoon on Good Friday and promoted meditation on seven sentences uttered by Jesus on the Cross, according to the Gospels. This project gave Haydn the opportunity to explore a universe of mysticism for which he had no room in Austria, and the original version of the orchestral work was a great success across Europe. It was originally played in a cave under the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, with all the light entrances covered and only a large lamp in the centre breaking the darkness. This evening, the work is interspersed with music by C. P. E. Bach, a composer who earned Haydn’s admiration. His most famous keyboard concerto is here performed by Christian Zacharias, in the dual role of soloist and conductor.
