Jacques ou a Submissão
Event
Ensemble's new performance, directed by Jorge Pinto, Jacques ou a Submissão [Jack, or the Submission] (1950) brings us back Eugène Ionesco's theatre of the absurd. Stuck in a game of social conventions whose rules he longs to break free from, the protagonist is led, according to Ionesco, "to the most complete submission, to the point of resigning himself to a kind of biological stillness". This journey, full of surreal situations and punctuated by elements of humour and hysteria, develops mainly in terms of words. It is through work on language, from nonsense to discourse revealed as an instrument of power, that the transformation of a laughable burlesque into an apotheosis of the modern grotesque takes place.
