Conversas com Ciência, a partnership between Serralves and CIIMAR - Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research, invites a researcher and the community for an informal conversation, one Sunday a month. These sessions aim to bring the community closer to science by getting to know the work developed by the researchers at this centre. In this edition of Conversas com Ciência, this time online, researcher Pedro Leão will speak to us about: THE SECRET CHEMISTRY OF THE OCEANS IN CONVERSAS COM CIÊNCIA.
Traditionally, the search for molecules of natural origin for the treatment of infections, cancer or other pathologies, has been carried out exhaustively from terrestrial sources. However, as the vastness of the oceans has been explored, it has become clear that the countless organisms that inhabit them represent an extraordinary reservoir of new molecules. These are sometimes very different from those found in terrestrial environments, being used as medicine all over the world, although we are still at the beginning of a long road to discover the chemistry that hides in the oceans.
