“More experiences of that kind would have killed me.” These are the words that Berlioz used to describe the intensity he experienced during the performances of “Romeo and Juliet”, in 1827, during the season dedicated to Shakespeare's work at the Odeon Theatre. “Love Scene” from “Roméo et Juliette” is from the Third Symphony that the composer wrote a few years after this overwhelming experience, expressing his love for Shakespeare and also for the lead actress, Harriet Smithson. In this programme, the score by Chausson will feature the voice of soprano Eduarda Melo evoking the images, sounds and aromas of the poems by the Frenchman Maurice Bouchor – from the sea to the sky and the leaves that ripple in the wind. Finally, a symphonic poem by Tchaikovsky on another tragic love. “Francesca de Rimini”, offered in marriage to an educated but deformed man, falls in love with his brother. The lovers end up murdered and remain whirling for all eternity in the second circle of Hell.
