As of today, October 1st, the frequency will increase in eight routes of Sociedade de Transportes Colectivos do Porto (STCP), which exclusively serve the city of Porto, comes into action. The initiative came from Rui Moreira, who personally endeavoured to arrange with the neighbouring municipalities the increase in the routes with greater demand.
In preparation since mid-August, when Rui Moreira presented the proposal to Unidade Técnica de Suporte (UTS), a structure that includes the six municipalities served by the company, the measure will now benefit thousands of citizens using routes 200, 201, 203, 204, 205, 207, 208 and 305 of the STCP network in the municipality of Porto.
Altogether, the service is increased with 160 additional trips per day, resulting in a rise of about 16% in the number of trips offered.
The solution of the Mayor of Porto aims to neutralize the effects of the increased demand for public transport, now that the school year has started and that the gradual return to workplaces becomes more permanent, in addition to taking into account that the maximum capacity allowed in vehicles, imposed by the present pandemic situation, it is 2/3 of passengers.
Routes increased from October 1st
- Route 200 (Bolhão- Cast. Queijo)
- Route 201 (Aliados -Viso)
- Route 203 (Marquês- Cast. Queijo)
- Route 204 (Hosp. De S. João-Foz)
- Route 205 (Campanhã- Cast. Queijo)
- Route 207 (Campanhã-Mercado da Foz)
- Route 208 (Aliados-Aldoar)
- Route 305 (Cordoaria-Hosp. De S. João)
In a statement, STCP says it is "making every effort so that, within a similar context, even during the month of October, it is possible to increase the service on routes that also serve the remaining municipalities - Gondomar, Maia, Matosinhos, Valongo and Vila Nova de Gaia".
However, it draws attention to the "limited resources available for increases in supply". Thus, to respond to this urgent need to increase travel on some routes, the provider is evaluating other solutions, namely by subcontracting route services or by renting and / or purchasing buses, it says.
At the moment, to be able to operationalize the increase of the Porto routes, STCP has already went ahead with the subcontracting of the Route 403 (Boavista [Casa da Música-Campanhã]) to the company Maia Transportes, also starting today, October 1st. The buses that will run will be properly identified with the STCP brand and will be operated according to the conditions that apply throughout the company's network.
Subcontracting only covers working days, with STCP maintaining the service of the routes on weekends and holidays. The award of subcontract is for three months, from 1 October to 31 December.
In the same context, the subcontracting of the Route ZC (Estádio do Dragão-Areias) is expected for the next week, which will have minis buses with a capacity greater than the one currently used by STCP.
It is recalled that Sociedade de Transportes Colectivos do Porto is the exclusive road public transport provider in the city of Porto.
