The winners of the fifth edition of Prémio Madalena Sá e Costa/Câmara Municipal do Porto, Pedro Santos (Accordion) and Diego Alfonso (Trompete), take the stage of Campo Alegre . Municipal Theatre for a concert to the public, this Wednesday, September 16th. The session starts at 9:30 pm and admission is free but limited to the maximum capacity allowed in the auditorium, taking into account the current context.

The initiative is the result of a partnership between the Municipality and Conservatório de Música do Porto, marks once again the start of a new school year, presenting the city with the most prominent artists of classical music.

Pedro Santos is not yet 20 years old, but his talent and dedication to the accordion did not go unnoticed by the prestigious Conservatório de Música do Porto, the school where he finished high school.

Currently, he is attending the music-performance course at the University of Aveiro. He has worked with several world-renowned accordionists, such as Alexandr Dmitriev, Franck Angelis, Christine Rossi and Hanzi Wang. In his curriculum, which is still growing, he has already participated in several competitions, namely the National and International Alcobaça Accordion Competition, Montceau-les-Mines Competition (France), Accordion Days Competition in Prague (Czech Republic) and Folefest Competition at Conservatório Nacional.

He played in numerous concerts in the north and centre of the country, with groups with different formations: Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa, Orquestra Portuguesa de Guitarras e Bandolins, Ensemble PerFisarmónica. In addition, he has already participated in the Alcobaça International Accordion Week and the Porto Accordion Festival.

The second winner of this edition of the Madalena Sá e Costa Award, Diego Alfonso, a promising name on the trumpet, started his studies in the world of music and this particular musical instrument when he was only 10 years old. He finished high school at Conservatório de Música do Porto in 2020. During this time, he participated in several masterclasses and trumpet meets with several famous trumpeters and pedagogues, including Benjamín Moreno, Pierre Dutot, Gileno Santana, Bruno Fernandes, Adam Rapa, Fred Sautter, Manuel Luís Azevedo, Portuguese Brass, Gábor Tarkövi, Shun Sasaki and Jorge Almeida.

He won numerous awards in national and international competitions, such as the third place in the "V Concurso de Trompete da Póvoa do Varzim", in 2014, and second place in the International Wind Instruments Competition "Terras de la Salette", in the same year. Diego Alfonso was also the big winner of "Concurso Interno do Conservatório de Música do Porto" in 2015, which he repeated on the following year, but at a different level, among many other awards he has already won.

The now winner of the Madalena Sá e Costa Award was also part of various projects and ensembles such as Orquestra Sinfónica do Conservatório de Música do Porto; participated in the recording of the CD "FidelidadeMusical" by Banda Musical de Souto - Academia de Música de Paços de Brandão (2012); and integrated different line-ups such as 1st trumpet, chorist and percussionist.

The Prémio Madalena Sá e Costa/Câmara Municipal do Porto was established in 2015 on the proposal of the then councillor of Culture, Paulo Cunha e Silva, during his first visit to Conservatório de Música do Porto. The designation chosen is a tribute to the great Porto cellist, born in 1915.
