The new temporary pedestrian zones are already in operation, installed in 16 streets of the city centre and the Historic Centre of Porto, between 8 am on Saturday and 8 pm on Sunday. The city is even more inviting for an outdoor family outing, with the certainty that there is no lack of public space to enjoy a safe good sunny day.
Have you tried seeing the city in the middle of Rua de Passos Manuel or Avenida Rodrigues de Freitas? If not, it's time to do it. These two thoroughfares are part of the 16 streets that from the beginning of this Saturday morning until the end of Sunday became temporary pedestrian zones.
You can, without fear, walk in the middle of the road, because within these hours they are reserved for pedestrians and soft modes of transport (bicycles and scooters). They only function as coexistence zones for residents, who can travel with vehicles inside, to have access to car parks, but at a maximum speed of 20 km / hour. Loading and unloading are also allowed, but only between 6:30 am and 11 am on Saturdays and Sundays.
In the temporary pedestrian zones, there is urban furniture that, through the coloured markings on the floor, creates seating areas, garden areas and bicycle parking areas.
The measure, implemented by Porto City Hall, will take effect on weekends in the city centre, in an experience that follows the best practices of European cities committed to sustainability. In addition, it aims to foster a new leisure and shopping experience, without neglecting the time we are currently going through, which requires extra care for responsible social interaction.
