With 2022 coming to an end, it is time to look ahead to the next seven months of the season at Teatro Municipal do Porto. Until July 2023, there are world premieres, national premieres, anniversaries and festivals at Rivoli . Municipal Theatre and Campo Alegre . Municipal Theatre.
From 18 to 22 January, the 91st anniversary of Teatro Rivoli with “Mystery Sonatas/ for Rosa” by Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker & Amandine Beyer/ Rosas, Gli Incogniti. A performance where music and geometry intertwine through a symbol: the rose. The anniversary programme is completely free, by picking up a ticket on the days of the performance, from 10 am, at the Rivoli ticket office or online.
At the Campo Alegre Auditorium, on February 4th, “Suite nº4” by Lacoste, Macé, Roux, Ictus. A joint presentation with Culturgest of the last chapter of the series of suites, from the artistic project Encyclopédie de la parole. The result of 15 years of research and collection, the Frenchman Joris Lacoste now lets the voices of his sound collection to be heard without the mediation of actors.
On February 10th and 11th, Philippe Quesne returns to Rivoli to present “Farm Fatale”. On the verge between human and puppet, peasant and scarecrow, the five masked characters settle in an immaculate white setting. The audience is led into a world that evokes a farm, where a group of scarecrow poets live who run an independent radio station, sing, play music, invent slogans. A production by the Vivarium Studio theatrical innovation laboratory.
Also in February, on the 17th and 18th, Né Barros premieres at the Rivoli Grand Auditorium “Distante – Paisagens, Máquinas, Animais”. A fictional adventure that will focus, above all, on the machine and on the possibility of expanding the body and the place.
“t u m u l u s”, with choreography by François Chaignaud and musical direction by Geoffroy Jourdain, arrives at Rivoli on March 16th and 17th, in a joint presentation with Culturgest. A fascinating experience that combines voice and dance and explores the paradox of bodies, divided between the singular and the collective, materiality and eternity.
On March 25th, “Facce D’Amore: por ocasião dos 80 anos de Jorge Gil” with Polish countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński and the orchestra il Pomo d’Oro, in a national premiere and co-presented with the CCB. Winner of the Grand Finals of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, in 2016, and of the Marcella Sembrich International Vocal Competition, in 2015, Jakub Józef Orliński pays tribute to Jorge Gil, founder of Em Órbita, an important figure in the Portuguese radio scene and in holding classical music concerts.
“Una imagen interior” by El Conde de Torrefiel, opens in Portugal on March 31st and April 1st. A poetic exercise that explores the principles of the concept of fiction in struggle with the unquestionable law of gravity to which bodies are subjected. The concept of reality is problematic as a malleable construction in constant movement in the human task of emancipation from nature.
From 18 to 30 April, another edition of DDD – Festival Dias da Dança kicks off with “Encantado” by Lia Rodrigues/Companhia de Danças. This play marks the return of the Brazilian choreographer to the festival with a new show, after her performance in the 2019 edition.
The 70th anniversary of the TEP – Teatro Experimental do Porto will be celebrated with the premiere of “Elas entram e ficam!” by Tânia Dinis, on June 16th and 17th. About what the archive could be, the documentation of a cultural policy in a theatre company, and its socioeconomic relationship over seven decades of activity.
To close the 2022/2023 season, on July 7th and 8th, will premiere in Portugal at Rivoli “MOMO” by Ohad Naharin in collaboration with Batsheva Dance Company and Ariel Cohen. With a soundtrack composed of the album “Landfall”, by Laurie Anderson and Kronos Quartet, one of the greatest ensembles of contemporary classical music.
