In common, face masks and eyes, which from the front or profile angles, show determination and perseverance. The artist Alexandre Farto, better known as Vhils, wanted to honour the health workers and as there was a bare wall at the visitors’ entrance of Hospital de São João he sculpted the faces of 10 workers from this Porto’s hospital.

"The mural is a thank you and a heartfelt tribute to all who are at the frontline, both of the current pandemic and of daily health care, how important they are in the lives of each one of us. This is about praising the courage, dedication and altruism with which they put their lives at risk by protecting ours", said the artist in a statement.

Before starting the mural, Vhils and his team photographed the honourees, including doctors, nurses, assistants, technical staff, and managers. Only after this preparation work did he begin the mural, which was completed a week after it started.

The project, which the artist offered to the hospital, also intends to mark the 40th anniversary of the National Health Service.
