These days, the city of Porto is witnessing an explosion of colour. The "fault" is of the approximately 100 thousand specimens of tulips that embellish, with lush colours, several public gardens, squares and planters installed in pedestrian or crossing areas.
The visual spectacle captures the attention of passers-by and deserves, therefore, to be preserved. It is the physical evidence of the commitment and dedication of dozens of municipal workers, among those who have grown the bulbs at the Municipal Plant Nursery, since December last year, and those who guaranteed the tulips’ adaptation in the gardens and other public spaces.
In fact, before reaching their final location, the tulips undergo a careful growing process, with the bulbs being planted first, manually and in pots, by about 10 gardeners. Afterwards, the tulips are housed in a greenhouse, in order to be protected from frost, providing them with all the conditions necessary for their germination.
The combination of colours (various shades of pink, red, yellow and gold), and the nine varieties of the approximately 100 thousand tulips that adorn the city of Porto, is even more visible in the Jardim de São Lázaro (or rather, Jardim Marques de Oliveira, as it is registered and which, by the way, is the oldest garden in the city), in Jardim Émile David (in front of Palácio de Cristal) and in Passeio Alegre Garden.
But there are still other areas where this flower, originally from Turkey, but with strong implantation in Holland since the 16th century, announces spring in Porto: in Jardim do Infante and Rua do Infante, Praça da Trindade, Avenida do Brasil , and many more.
