Invicta's longest night is back and thousands of people are expected to experience São João in the city's streets. There are several traffic restrictions to consider and a recommendation to make: use public transport to go to Porto’s city centre.

Metro running all night long

Metro do Porto will strengthen its service within the scope of the festivities of São João from 8 pm on the 23rd, the eve of the holiday, with the transport between Porto and Gaia will be restricted.

"From 8 pm, on the 23rd, the metro service will always be carried out with two vehicles and with service will increase on all the lines, except for the Violet Line (E) [which serves the airport], which will close at the usual time (at 1 am)", the company said in a statement.

The company informs that the main stations, given the highlights of the party, will be those of São Bento, Aliados and Casa da Música, in a year in which the festivities, in Porto, are divided between Gardens of Palácio de Cristal, Largo do Amor de Perdição (in Cordoaria) and Casa da Música.

As for the Yellow line (D), which connects Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia, "from 11:45 pm, due to being closed to the metro on the Luís I Bridge, because of the fireworks on the river. The metro will still run on the sections Hospital de São João/São Bento [Porto] and General Torres/Santo Ovídio [Gaia]".

STCP will strengthen the main bus stops to arrive in the city centre

STCP - Sociedade de Transportes Colectivos do Porto will also have a special service for the festivities, starting on Thursday evening (June 23rd) and ending on Friday morning (June 24th, public holiday), consists of strengthening the main bus stops to arrive in the city centre, as well as an increase in the frequency and use of large-capacity vehicles, ensuring efficient mobility to and from all the municipalities where it operates (Porto, Gondomar, Maia, Matosinhos, Valongo and Vila Nova of Gaia).

The company also mentions that due to traffic restrictions in Aliados, Cordoaria and Ribeira, the last bus stops of the trips will be relocated to places close to these areas.

Regarding trams, the service will end earlier (at 6 pm) on the eve of S. João, the 23rd, due to the traffic restrictions in force. On June 24th, the tram service on both lines starts at 9 am, departing from Infante and Carmo, respectively.

The festivities of São João, in Porto, return, from 23 to 24 June, “decentralised” by three stages in the city and with the fireworks being launched from the Douro River. This year, the usual stage on Avenida dos Aliados will be replaced by three stages: one in praça do Rossio in the Gardens of Palácio de Cristal, another in Largo Amor de Perdição (in the Cordoaria area) and finally, one in Casa da Música square.
