Countless composers felt impelled to write music to accompany the screening of the film “Metropolis”, a masterpiece of German Expressionism, directed by Fritz Lang in 1927. Filipe Raposo, resident pianist at Cinemateca Portuguesa and author of several soundtracks for cinema and theatre, accepted the challenge of Teatro São Luiz and created an original score, performed by 15 elements of Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa, under the direction of conductor Cesário Costa.

After the great success in Lisbon, Coliseu Porto Ageas presents this Film-Concert on July 23rd. An evening when the music of the present interweaves with a classic film that portrays the dystopian vision of the city of the future.

If “Metropolis” is a parable about social relations in a city of the future, in which the privileged classes live high above, while the mass of oppressed workers lives underground and struggles with the man-machine opposition, Filipe Raposo's score for this which is one of the most amazing films in history is, in itself, a reflection on the vision of big cities. The music emphasizes mass verticality, symmetrical angles, rhythmic sound environments that evoke the gears of heavy machinery. It is, simultaneously, a look from the future (today our present day) to the past.
