The airline of the Baltic states (airBaltic) is the latest airline to announce new flights, from Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, with two flights a week, to and from Porto with the Latvian capital, Riga, as of 1 May 2023.

The route to Porto is one of 18 new operations announced by the airline. “This is the largest number of new routes in a single season we have ever seen at airBaltic. We continue to be committed to our home cities in the Baltics and improving connectivity to and from the region. We are glad to expand airBaltic offering for the next summer season, both with new route additions and increased flights frequency on our existing leisure and city breaks routes”, said Martin Gauss, the airline's president and CEO, in a statement.

On the airBaltic website it is already possible to make reservations for the Porto-Riga-Porto route, which are also available at travel agencies. The estimated flight time is over four hours, with prices starting at 149€ per trip.

Portugal will now have five weekly flights to the capital of Latvia, allowing connections to other Baltic countries and several Finnish and Scandinavian cities. Speaking to the specialist press, Pedro Castro, director of SkyExpert, a company dedicated to commercial aviation, underlines that airBaltic introduces something new into the Portuguese market: “companies usually wait until they have a daily flight or more to Lisbon and only then think about expanding to Porto. Air Baltic clearly broke this rule,” he says.

In addition to Porto, airBaltic now flies between Riga and Istanbul (Turkey), Hannover (Germany), Bucharest (Romania), Burgas (Bulgaria), Bilbao (Spain), Tivat (Montenegro), Yerevan (Armenia), Belgrade (Serbia) and Baku (Azerbaijan).

It should be remembered that, this year, Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport was considered the best European airport infrastructure with a capacity of 10-25 million passengers.
