"A menina do mar" marks Sophia's birth

The music and theatre show "A menina do mar" celebrates at Teatro Campo Alegre, at 4 pm next Saturday, the centenary of the birth of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, who would turn 100 years today.

One of Sophia's most beloved books (1919-2004) turns into a musical tale, with actors and musicians telling the story of a little girl who lives in the sea – who is curious about life on land - of a little boy who lives on land – and is curious about life in the sea - and the unlikely encounter between those two worlds...

It features a friendly clarinettist dolphin, a distrusting saxophonist crab, a mysterious bassoonist octopus, and so many other fantastic beings, gathered under the serious look of the double bass player, the Sea King. Is it possible to reach an agreement so that everyone may live in harmony?

The answer is sought in this performance, which was born from the joint work by composer Edward Luiz Ayres d'Abreu, stage director Ricardo Neves-Neves and conductor Martim Sousa Tavares, Sophia’s grandson.

In addition to the Saturday afternoon performance, "A menina do mar" takes to the stage exclusively for schools at 3 pm tomorrow and 10:30 am and 3 pm on Friday.
