Autumn in Jazz at Casa da Música

The seventh edition of Outono em Jazz series will feature more than a dozen concerts at Casa da Música, starting this Thursday, October 10th, featuring renowned names and new artists until November 4th.

The opening concert, with free admission, is performed by Martin Sued's Tatadios Cuarteto, Argentine composer, arranger and bandoneonist. The musician, who has already released two albums with this quartet, is also part of the Chiche Trio and the Sued-Nikitoff duo. And recently released "Iralidad", his first album with compositions for solo bandoneon, already presented in various parts of the world (similar to a concertina, the bandoneon is mainly used in the region of Rio de la Plata, Uruguay and Argentina, where it is the main instrument of the tango orchestra). Martin Sued has also collaborated in concerts and / or albums by artists such as Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, Zeca Pagodinho, and many more.

In addition to this opening concert, on Thursday night, Outono em Jazz will parade at Casa da Música much more of the "best music ever made under the comprehensive scope of a genre marked by the cult of improvisation and innovation." To this end, it features the American trumpeter and composer Theo Crocker (grandson of the trumpeter Doc Cheatham and disciple of Donald Byrd) or the influential duo Kevin Hays and Lionel Loueke.

One of the highlights of the programme is the performance by the mythical The Art Ensemble of Chicago, on October 15th, which includes Porto on its international tour with which it is celebrating its 50th anniversary. It also features two of the original group members: Roscoe Mitchell and Don Moye.

The saxophonists: Swede Ilhan Ersahin, who has been exploring Turkish music’s jazz and funk for 25 years, and Brazilian Esdras Nogueira, who revisits the album "Transa" released by Caetano Veloso in 1972, are other names to be considered.

The programme also includes the Brazilian choro collective Água de Moringa and pianist Carlos Fuchs; the quintet of Polish double bassist Wojtek Mazoleweski; the "Bossa Nova anos 60" party featuring the duo João Cavalcanti and Marcelo Caldi and Quarteto do Rio, Roberto Menescal, Wanda Sá and Rodolfo de Carvalho; the Ukrainian group Pokaz Trio of pianist Andrei Pokaz, bassist Yevgeny Myrmyr and drummer Alexandre Lebedenko; Rabou Abou-Khalil's trio, Joachim Kühn and Jarrod Cagwin with the blending of sounds from Lebanon, Germany and the Middle East.

Portugal is represented in this festival by Ricardo Toscano's trio, guitarist Manuel de Oliveira and Rodrigo Amado's quartet.

On the last day of October, Russian couple Oleg Butman and Natalia Smirnova present their album "Moment of Happiness", ending this series on November 4th with drummer Mark Guiliana.
