Porto awarded by the "Green Flag"

The City Park and “Jardim do Passeio Alegre” were granted the "Green Flag" award, joining the group of 2096 green spaces that have this recognition worldwide. These two green spaces are the first to obtain the title in Portugal, together with the Botanical Garden of Porto.

With this worldwide recognition, Porto gains the status of being associated with the prestigious "Green Flag" award that establishes the highest requirement standards to be followed in the management and maintenance of parks and gardens. This title is awarded annually by the UK Government Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government and by the Non-Governmental Organisation Keep Britain Tidy.

Like the blue flag awarded to beaches, the Green Flag award is an excellent example of joint achievement and gives communities a sense of civic pride, both for the regeneration of an area and for the improvement in terms of health and education, cleanliness of public space and the associated prestige.

In addition to Portugal, this year the award was also given "Green Flag" to countries like Australia, Belgium, United Kingdom, Finland, Germany, Mexico, Holland, New Zealand, Scotland and Sweden.

According to Carl McClean, International Development Manager for the Green Flag Award, "we are delighted to celebrate yet another record year for the Green Flag Award with more green flags. Each flag honours the thousands of employees and volunteers who work tirelessly to keep up the standards required by the Green Flag Award. We are proud to have so many wonderful green spaces around the world for people to enjoy."
