  • Pipa is the place to taste and feel the full tradition of the Douro, before taking some of it home with you. Visitors to Pipa can enjoy an excellent glass of wine, accompanied by dry figs with almonds dipped in honey or perhaps by a platter of cheeses, sausages or smoked hams, seated on wooden benches around the eponymous wine barrel (pipa in Portuguese). All the products on offer here are from the Douro and most of them are homemade or produced by small businesses. The guided tours of the Porto Jewish Museum/Synagogue will help visitors understand the architectural and symbolic importance of this, the largest synagogue in the Iberian Peninsula. You will also learn something about the religious, cultural and historical sides of Judaism. The museum houses a varied collection of objects and documents relating to Judaism as a religious practice and to the history of the Jews of Porto, from medieval times through to today. There is a special focus on the life and work of Captain Barros Basto, the founder of the community here in the city.
