Tourism Department – Porto City Council

The Porto City Council aims for the city to be considered a distinguished tourist destination in terms of the quality it has to offer, and for it to become internationally recognized.

Its Tourism Department is dedicated to gathering, organizing and publishing information about what is on offer. It is responsible for welcoming tourists and visitors (at the municipal Tourism Offices) and introducing them to city. This depends on the cooperation of several private and public entities in the field, along with its qualified, responsible and proactive staff.  The Tourism Department also provides market research results in order to increase competitiveness, extending people´s stay and encouraging a repeat visit.

The Tourism Department is organized into back office and front office groups; the latter directly interacting with visitors. These groups ensure preparation and organization of the services provided for the different clients.

The following services are available to the tourists/visitors either directly, by phone, mail or internet:

  • Tourism information on Porto – Tourism Resources Database and other contents on the city, including multimedia items such as:
    • Trip planning support
    • City guide
    • Academic, professional, commercial support, etc.
  • Free supply of the city's tourist map
  • Tour suggestions
  • Porto Card information and sale
  • Selling promotional materials and official merchandising articles “Porto Official Product”
  • Selling the “Cartão Jovem Municipal” (youngster municipal card) (Tourism Office - Centre)
  • Selling transport tickets (Tourism Office - Centre)
  • Selling sightseeing tours (Porto Tours – Tourism Office - Centre)
  • Registration for events organized by the City Council
  • Interactive multimedia solutions and free access to the Tourism Portal
  • Selling tickets for the Municipal Museums and the Rivoli Municipal Theatre

Technical services are responsible organizing information. They also assist tourism agents by:

  • Producing information and promotional materials about the city to suit the different tourist segments
  • Freely providing promotional and information materials to assist the Meeting Industry
  • Maintaining the Tourism Resources Database
  • Managing the City Council’s Tourism Portal
  • Monitoring the tourist flow in Porto and conducting surveys for tourists/visitors to get to know the characteristics of the demand-audience assisted at the tourism offices, as well as analyzing and spreading the respective results (iTur Porto)
  • Supporting academic and professional research about the tourism sector in Porto
  • Organizing/assisting walking tours
  • Supplying information in foreign languages, mainly in English and Spanish, but in other languages too
  • Promoting Porto as a tourism destination
  • Advertising, managing and trading products, such as Porto Card
  • Providing DVDs/videos, pictures and Porto’s tourist map
  • Conducting theme initiatives to promote the city and welcome tourists during specific seasons, such as Christmas, Easter, São João and World Tourism Day.

The Tourism Department is also committed to:

  • Improving the quality of the tourist welcome services in Porto through the “Porto’s Way Welcome” program, thus improving the destination’s image
  • Keeping a dynamic official tourism information network - “Porto Official Information Network”
  • Improving the base for creating an intelligent monitoring network of the tourist flow in Porto – iTurPorto
  • Strengthening the tourism sector in Porto by creating networks capable of enhancing public-private partnerships, as well as Porto’s position as a tourism destination.


ARPT Porto e Norte and ATC Porto Tours

The Porto City Council is currently chairman of:

  • Associação de Turismo do Porto e Norte, AR (Porto Convention & Visitors Bureau), Agência Regional de Promoção Turística, non-profit association. Its main goal is promoting Porto and Portugal’s Northern Region in terms of business and leisure tourism.
  • ATC Porto Tours - Associação de Empresários para o Desenvolvimento do Turismo Cultural no Porto e na Região – association that aims at organizing, spreading and providing tourists and visitors with an integrated and diversified offer of tourism services and entertainment in Porto and the region, thus improving the destination Porto-Northern Portugal by its quality and attractiveness, as a result of a sustainable partnership between tourism public and private entities.  

Through the Tourism Department and with these leading positions at ARPT Porto e Norte and ATC - Porto Tours, the Porto City Council completes the management cycle as a tourism destination via promotion, trade and a warm welcome.

Tourism Police Force – Public Security Police – Porto’s Metropolitan Command

The Tourism Police Force was founded in 1998.  The station is located by the Tourism Office Centre.

The Police Force agents speak several languages and are specifically trained in assisting Porto visitors and tourists.

The Tourism Police Force specializes in assisting visitors and tourists that have been victims of transnational offences. They provide legal support, information, social support and help with solving situations related to losses. They are able to interpret to and from many foreign languages, particularly Spanish, English, French, German, Italian, Russian and Servo-Croat.

They are responsible for inspecting varied tourism activities.

The Tourism Police Force agents also assist tourists out on the streets, monitoring main tourist locations, especially the World Heritage area. They are identified with “TOURISM PATROL” written on their clothes and are able to provide detailed information and support to tourists.
